Intensive Needs Behavior Interventionist – SHINES Program

Be part of something special as Laraway Youth and Family Services expands our school wing for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or other Intensive Needs.

The Intensive Needs Behavior Interventionist (INBI) will carry multiple responsibilities depending on the needs of their assigned students. This position will receive support from a range of colleagues, including but not limited to the clinician, case manager, coordinator, pod lead and Backpack director. The INBIs will provide individualized support services to assigned students who have significant communication, behavioral, academic, social, emotional and daily living needs across school and community settings. INBIs will be trained to work with several SHINES students across the course of the school year.

Essential Duties:

• Learn and implement a variety of instructional and intervention strategies as outlined in the assigned student’s Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs) and individualized programming protocols.
• Provide 1:1 service and direct supervision to identified students.
• Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of each assigned student’s Individualized Plan of Care (IPC)
• Collect, maintain, and file on-going data required for progress monitoring and billing (E.g. ABC sheets, daily data, work samples, etc.)
• Become familiar with assigned student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), implement accommodations as outlined therein.
• Complete all agency, billing and program paperwork accurately, within the identified timeframe and in accordance with federal and state mandates.
• Actively participate in supervision meetings: bring agenda items, ask questions, share ideas.
• Be on time for the workday.
• Maintain and utilize personal cell phone to communicate with colleagues via voice, text, and email.

Therapeutic and Behavior Services:

• Manage the physical safety of students and others by utilizing antecedent management, de-escalation strategies, and physical intervention as trained and certified.
• Prepare for, respond to, and debrief crisis as necessary.
• Support development and maintenance of a positive learning environment; model therapeutic relationships.
• Appropriately advocate for students by communicating needs, observations, and changes in a timely fashion; provide insights on what interventions are effective as well as strategies that could be modified.
• Communicate professionally with family/caregiver through daily home/school journals.
• Actively participate in SHINES and agency meetings and trainings.
• Foster a positive approach to collaborative problem solving.
• Provide transportation to and from community activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Bachelors in a related field is preferred; however, a bachelors degree nearing completion and relevant experience, such as Intensive Special Needs Paraprofessional or Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), may be considered.
• Must have experience supporting autistic individuals and/or individuals with complex needs.
• Successfully clearing (and maintaining clearance) Criminal Background Check.
• Valid driver’s license, excellent driving record, and daily access to a safe, reliable, insured vehicle.

Special Position Requirements:

• This position is a Mandated Reporter, as such, is required by law to report suspected abuse or neglect to authorities.
• Must be able to work effectively within the structure of the school keeping Laraway ethics and conduct expectations for behavior at the forefront at all times.
• Ability to complete and maintain Handle with Care, Part 1 and Part 2.
• Ability to complete and maintain medical Handle with Care certification.
• Ability to pass and maintain First Aid & CPR certification

Work/Physical Requirements:

• Given the at-risk population served, the position requires ongoing training and preparedness in the execution of physical restraint techniques. This may require running to catch a student.
• The “Handle with Care” training program specifies that individuals with back and neck limitations are likely to be hampered in the execution of the protocols and greatly increases risk of harm to self or student.
• Ability to engage with youth in a variety of activities ranging from art, music, cooking and physical activities such hiking and other outdoor sports.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
