We have been able to keep ourselves pretty busy with winter activities this year!
Kids and staff have were able to get out on to some of the local cross country ski trails and we had a group of students who participated in a weekly ski and snowboard program at Smuggler’s Notch Ski Resort.
Much had been happening indoors as well. Kids in our foster care program participated in a cooking & nutrition after-school program with our friends from the Lamoille County Court Diversion and Restorative Justice Programs. These classes have given the kids some great independent living skills and they have made some delicious (and nutritious!) foods like pizzas, chili and seven-layer salads!
We also ran the second year of the “Shooting for Goals” program with the Johnson State College basketball teams. Players and coaches from the men’s and women’s teams met with our students on a weekly basis to teach basketball skills, but more importantly, to provide much needed mentoring from some very positive role models. A big THANK YOU to our partners at Court Diversion and JSC!
Over the last few years, both our foster care and school programs have identified how important it is that Laraway provide opportunities for our kids to be working on skills and experiences that will help them be prepared to transition into adulthood. While both of our programs have worked creatively with the kids to find work and community service experiences, we recognize that we can always do more to help even the youngest of our kids get ready for the challenges and joys of adulthood. In this vain, we invited the Vermont Parent Information Center (VPIC) to present their workshop “Transitioning to Adulthood” here at Laraway in February. The workshop provided some great information and inspiration and we look forward to further developing our transition resources.
Both our foster care and school programs have been looking to the summer and fall when we will again see many of our young people transitioning back to their public school and home communities. We invite family, friends and our community partners to work with us and the kids to make these moves as smooth as possible. Please contact us to find out how you can help or to talk to us about placements for our summer and fall programs.
